Uncle Julio's Fine Mexican Food

"OH! EM! GEE! You need to try Uncle Julio's!"

"Uncle Julio's has the best Mexican food in the Dallas area."

"Dude... You will love the Mexican food at Uncle Julio's... since you are Mexican and all."

These quotes were actually said to me when I began asking around for good Mexican food in the area. Since these three people were so adamant about Uncle Julio's, I decided to see if Uncle Julio's Fine Mexican Food is worthy of being Beaner Certified.

I visited the location in Allen, Texas. I walked through the doors and noticed the interior decorations to be slightly odd for a Mexican restaurant. It looked too upscale with the artisan style tiled flooring and wood burning fireplace. What made this Mexican restaurant seem really out of place was the music that was playing through the in house speaker system. What Mexican restaurant plays The Backstreet Boys in building? Seriously!

On to the food.

Appetizers: Queso
Quick summation: Cheap quality with no flavor. How can queso be bland? I don't know, but Uncle Julio sure knows.

The Chips were average and the salsa was great. The salsa had alot of flavor and zest with a perfect blend of spiciness.

Main Course: Mesquite grilled Beef and Chicken Fajitas served with a side of Frog Legs, Guacamole, Pico de Gallo, Rice, Frijoles a la Charra and Home-Made Flour Tortillas
The fajitas (both beef and chicken) were awesome. They had great flavor and were grilled to perfection. The best thing about the fajitas was the freshness which you could taste with every bite. I highly recommend the fajitas to anyone. The frog legs were delicious as well. They were quite possibly the best frog legs I have ever eaten.

As for the guacamole... It was not fresh at all and was ordinary.

The rice was stale and had a plastic texture.

The frijoles a la charra were the worst I have eaten. Believe me. I have eaten a whole lot of frijoles in my lifetime. Uncle Julio's frijoles a la charra weren't even "a la charra". If you are a true die hard Mexican food lover, then you know frijoles a la charra would have these key ingredients which are pinto beans, diced tomatoes, diced jalapenos, and small slices of ham or bacon. Other ingredients such as onions and cilantro can be added, but you do not stray away from those four key ingredients. Uncle Julio's frijoles a la charra only contained pinto beans. That's what I call frijoles a la "nada"!

Pico de Gallo was okay. Nothing special about it. Nothing at all.

The tortillas were awesome; however, a few in the batch were undercooked.

Price: "NO MAMES!" (translation: "You must be kidding me!")

The price for this food is unreal! The entire bill was close to $60 and it was not worth it. The only thing I found good was the complimentary salsa, the fajitas, the frog legs, and the tortillas. Everything else was below average and tasted like Paula Dean's Mexican cuisine.

Beaner Certification: FAIL!

Uncle Julio's Fine Mexican Food fails the certification because they can't deliver on the side dishes. What makes them FAIL royaly is the fact that Uncle Julio calls his food "Fine Mexican Food". You can't call it Fine Mexican Food if the queso is a tasteless orange goo or if the Frijoles a la charra are just pinto beans floating in hot water.

If you want fine Mexican Food that's authentic you should not be eating at Uncle Julio's. You should be eating at that shady local taco shack where the only language spoken is Spanish.

Orale.
